About IDEA Homeschool
Helping Alaskan families homeschool with confidence since 1997.

Built by homeschoolers, for homeschoolers.

IDEA (Interior Distance Education of Alaska) is a public homeschool program that was created to make homeschooling easier for families across the state. From the very beginning, parents were at the heart of IDEA, helping design a program that truly understands the needs of homeschooling families.

What started in 1997 with a small group of families has now grown into Alaska’s largest homeschool program, serving more than 8,000 students statewide. Even with that growth, we’ve kept the same focus: making sure every family feels supported, equipped, and free to design the education that works best for their children.

Our mission is simple:

  • Support parents as the primary decision-makers in their child’s education.

  • Provide resources and guidance that make homeschooling flexible and effective.

  • Build a community of families who are learning and thriving together.

The freedom you want. The support you need.

At IDEA, you get the freedom to teach your way, with the confidence of knowing you’re not doing it alone. Our certified teachers, local staff, and resource rooms are here to walk alongside you. You’ll also find a statewide community of parents who share your journey—families who know the challenges and the joys of homeschooling in Alaska.
